Common issues we support

Whatever you're going through, you don't have to face it alone. Explore the areas we commonly support for teens and adults.

Maybe the worry has stopped switching off. Maybe sleep has gone sideways, or things you used to enjoy have quietly dropped off the list. However it looks for you, you don't need a diagnosis — or a crisis — before you reach out.

These are the issues we support most often. Each one links to a page that explains, in plain English, what it can feel like and how care works.

When is it time to reach out?

There's no threshold you have to meet. That said, a few signs suggest extra support would genuinely help:

  • Low mood, worry or irritability that's hung around most days for a few weeks
  • Sleep or appetite that's changed — and stayed changed
  • Pulling back from people, work, school or things you usually enjoy
  • A loss or big life change that's harder to carry than you expected
  • Coping in ways that worry you, or that have stopped working
  • Someone who knows you well has told you they're concerned

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you're carrying a lot — and you don't have to sort it out alone.

You don't need a referral to be seen

Here's the part of the system that surprises people: you don't need a GP referral or a Mental Health Care Plan to see us. You can refer yourself with a phone call or an email, and Medicare rebates still apply.

Most Victorians reach mental health care through a GP or another primary care clinician — the Victorian Department of Health explains how the state's services fit together at www.health.vic.gov.au/mental-health-services. As a Nurse Practitioner-led clinic, we're one of those first doors: you can come straight to us, and we'll work alongside your GP, psychologist or psychiatrist whenever that's useful.

How we can help

Care starts with an unhurried first appointment. We take the time to understand what's going on — your history, your situation, what you'd like to change — before we suggest anything.

From there, support might include counselling and psychotherapy (we draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness), practical strategies you can use between sessions, and medication support where it's appropriate. We see teens 12+ and adults, in clinic in Gisborne and Woodend or via Telehealth — and our care is neuroaffirming by default.

Victoria is rebuilding its mental health system around care in the community — support closer to where people live, work and learn. You can read about the wider system on the Victorian Government's mental health hub at www.health.vic.gov.au/mental-health. Our aim is the local version of that promise: good care, close to home, without the hoops.

What happens when you reach out

You call or email. Berny — our practice coordinator will be in touch, usually within one business day. Specific questions will be personally clarified with Lindsay, as needed, prior to booking in appointments.

From there, you choose a time and a place: Gisborne, Woodend or Telehealth. There's nothing to prepare and nothing to prove. Come as you are, and we'll take it from there.

Need urgent support? Health in Mind does not provide crisis care. In an emergency call 000, or Lifeline 13 11 14, available 24/7.

You don't have to navigate this alone
