Adolescence is a period of significant growth, change, and exploration, marked by unique challenges and opportunities.
Adolescents may encounter various mental health challenges as they navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood. Some common issues addressed in counselling include:
Many adolescents experience anxiety and stress related to academic pressures, social relationships, family dynamics, and identity exploration. Counselling can help adolescents develop coping strategies, build resilience, and manage stress effectively.
Depression is a prevalent mental health concern among adolescents, characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities. MHNPs provide support, validation, and evidence-based interventions to help adolescents cope with depression and improve their overall wellbeing.
Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and identity formation, during which adolescents may grapple with questions of identity, sexuality, and self-esteem. Counselling offers adolescents a safe space to explore their sense of self, values, and aspirations, fostering a greater understanding and acceptance of themselves.
Adolescents may experience conflicts and challenges in their relationships with peers, family members, or romantic partners. Counselling helps adolescents develop communication skills, set boundaries, and navigate interpersonal dynamics in healthy and constructive ways.
Experimentation with drugs, alcohol, or risky behaviours can pose risks to adolescent health and wellbeing. MHNPs provide education, support, and intervention strategies to help adolescents make informed decisions and reduce harm associated with substance use and risky behaviours.
Counselling sessions with a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner are tailored to meet the unique needs and preferences of adolescents and their families. Here’s what you can expect during sessions:
Adolescents can expect a confidential and non-judgmental environment where they can express themselves openly and honestly. MHNPs prioritise confidentiality while also ensuring safety and wellbeing.
The initial session may involve a comprehensive assessment including exploration of mental health history, concerns, strengths, and goals. Together with the adolescent (and optionally with their parents), the MHNP collaboratively sets goals for counselling, identifying areas for growth, change, and improvement
MHNPs integrate evidence-based therapeutic modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, and solution-focused therapy, to address the adolescent’s concerns and promote positive outcomes. Counselling sessions may involve skill-building exercises, role-playing, and reflective discussions to support adolescents in developing coping strategies and enhancing resilience.
Depending on the adolescent’s preferences and circumstances, parents may be involved in some of the counselling sessions to provide support, gain insights into their child’s experiences, and learn effective parenting strategies. MHNPs can collaborate with parents separately to strengthen family relationships, improve communication, and support the adolescent’s overall wellbeing. Decision making around if, when and how frequently to involve parents in sessions is made collaboratively. Information sharing and confidentiality is discussed at the onset of sessions and ongoingly.
